A boat that has sprung a leak, its cargo of gear and supplies spoiled, is the subject of this photograph, which the title, "The result of a leak," makes plain. Its record lists boats, equipment and gold miners in Yukon Territory, so it likely records one of the hardships of the rush. The Klondike Gold Rush began after gold was found on Bonanza Creek in August 1896, and thousands of prospectors reached the Yukon that winter and the next, many hauling goods over mountain passes and then by river. Pictures like this one, dated December 1897, document the everyday wear of that effort, when a damaged hull could cost a party its food and tools.
