The caption card spells the group Kikayu, an older form of Kikuyu, the largest community in what was then British East Africa and is now Kenya. Kikuyu farmers worked the fertile highlands around Mount Kenya, land that colonial settlers pressed to claim after the protectorate was declared in 1895. The print belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by travel writers whose books and lectures introduced distant peoples to American readers. Made by a New York photo service, it is less a portrait of one named man than a window onto how such images circulated to Western audiences.
