Taken around 1933, the year Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office as the 32nd president, this portrait shows him at the start of a term that would soon be defined by the New Deal. The record credits photographer Elias Goldensky with the copyright, and the date comes from an old caption card, so it is best read as approximate. Portraits of this kind circulated widely through newspapers and government offices during the early Depression, helping to put a recognizable face on an administration confronting bank failures and mass unemployment.
