Betsy Ross, the Philadelphia upholsterer, appears here alongside George Washington, a pairing that ties this color reproduction to one of the best-known stories of the American flag. The scene follows the legend that Ross sewed the first Stars and Stripes at Washington's request in 1776. Her grandson first published that account in 1870, and historians have never confirmed it. Painter E. Percy Moran, who often worked on colonial and Revolutionary subjects, framed the flag as both a link to the past and a promise for the future, as the title *Then, now, and forever!* suggests. The photomechanical process made the painting available as a color print around 1908.
