The record files this print under Washington, DC, but its subject is Andersonville, the Confederate prison in southwest Georgia, officially called Camp Sumter. Opened in February 1864, it held more than 40,000 Union soldiers at its peak, under crowded and unsanitary conditions. About 13,000 of them died there before the war ended. The site is now part of Andersonville National Historic Site, and the camp remains one of the most studied examples of wartime captivity in the United States.
