Few pictures on the board show a seminary team, and this one places a ballgame inside a Catholic training school for priests in Suffern, New York. The seminary took its name from Peter Julian Eymard, a French priest who founded the Priests of the Blessed Sacrament, and its students were young men preparing for religious life. Around 1900, baseball was spreading quickly through American schools, colleges and parishes, and seminaries often fielded teams much like their secular counterparts. The photograph is worth a close look for how it blends clerical identity with a sport that was then new to many church institutions.
