Its slogan, "Champion of the Rights of the Plain People," marks this color poster as newspaper self-promotion rather than a news image. The New York Tribune was founded in 1841 by Horace Greeley, and by the time this lithograph was made, probably in the 1890s, the paper had built its reputation on reform-minded editorials and a wide readership. The printer, Liebler & Maass of New York, was a commercial lithography firm, so the poster shows how color printing was used to sell a newspaper to the public. The date is an estimate, so the exact year remains uncertain.
