An unidentified man sits for a half-length portrait, and the record gives us little more than his image and the year 1844. That date places the picture in the first decade of practical photography, when the daguerreotype, announced in France in 1839, was still a novelty for ordinary sitters. Each daguerreotype was a single unique image on a silvered copper plate, so the sitter had to hold still for minutes in bright light, and the portrait's sharpness and mirror-like surface reflect that early process. Because the sitter is unnamed, the picture is best read as a window onto the sitting itself and the fashions of the period.
