Five male trapeze artists dominate this hand-colored lithograph, a poster printed by the Calvert Litho Co. of Detroit around 1890. Its title was devised by Library of Congress staff, so the wording describes the scene rather than repeating a printed caption. In the 1890s, American circuses relied on large, eye-catching posters like this one to draw crowds from town to town, and aerial acts were a favorite selling point because their risk and athleticism translated well into bold color. The hand coloring added a warmth that plainer mass-produced posters often lacked.
