Drawn as an isometric projection, this view shows the President's House with its walls and roof at equal angles rather than receding into perspective, a method that let architects and builders compare proportions and massing at a glance. James Hoban designed the building, and construction began in 1792. British forces burned it in 1814 during the War of 1812, and it was rebuilt and reoccupied by James Monroe in 1817. The nickname "White House," which came from its light-colored sandstone and later its painted exterior, gradually entered common use during the 19th century.
