The name on this poster, Arm & Hammer Brand Soda, was a trademark for baking soda, and the bill borrows the bold color and boastful lettering of traveling circus posters to sell it. Its emblem, a flexed arm gripping a hammer, suggested strength in a humble pantry staple. Printers of the late nineteenth century often produced such bills as chromolithographs, and brands used the big top's spectacle to fix their names in shoppers' minds. Notice how the product is cast as the headliner, a reminder that everyday groceries were marketed with the energy of a sideshow.
