The only identifying detail for this glass negative is its title, "Hodge," which comes from caption cards or notes written by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified, so the subject itself remains uncertain. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1899 to supply newspapers with images of current events, people, and places, and its archive became one of the largest collections of early news photography. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium for press photographers of that period, and the Library of Congress holds the collection today.
