The only identifying detail for this glass negative is its title, CREOLE, taken from the Bain News Service caption, and no date is given. The word most often refers to people of mixed French, Spanish or African descent in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, though it was also applied to certain horses, cattle and languages, so the title leaves the subject open. George Grantham Bain's agency distributed news photographs from New York in the early twentieth century, and its 5 by 7 inch glass negatives captured many everyday and newsworthy scenes of that period. Since the caption is unverified, any reading of the picture should be treated as a working guess.
