The title points to Yaphank, a hamlet on Long Island where the Army built Camp Upton in 1917 to train draftees for the First World War. Photographs of troops heading to such camps were a staple of news photography in those years, and the Bain News Service, a New York agency, sold its images to newspapers across the country. The record does not date this glass negative, so the exact moment is uncertain, but the camp's wartime role gives the scene context. Camp Upton later became known for Irving Berlin's soldier revue, *Yip Yip Yaphank*, staged there in 1918.
