Sandusky, Ohio, in 1884 remained a Lake Erie port whose economy depended on the harbor and the railroads that reached the bay. Lake steamers and sailing vessels carried freight in and out during the navigation season, and fishing crews worked the bay and the open lake beyond it. The year was a presidential election year, and residents of Erie County followed the campaign closely in the local press, including the Sandusky Register. Anyone walking the downtown streets would have passed commercial blocks, church steeples, and frame houses that ran down toward the water, the town as its residents knew it that year.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Sandusky, Ohio, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
