Here the play's Scottish king is recast in the title's own terms: "Modern characters from Shakespeare," numbered No. 1 in its series, so it stands as the opening plate of a set that reimagines Shakespearean roles through contemporary dress and manner. The print was issued in London by the publisher E. Hedges in April 1783, when satirical etchings of this kind were popular for their pointed social commentary. Macbeth, a king of Scotland in the 11th century, was a favorite subject for the London stage and for artists, and the series shows how Shakespeare's tragic figures could be used as a familiar shorthand for current affairs and personalities.
