This plate stands apart from many on the board because its identification rests on a title of rank, Tewfik Pasha, rather than a place or event. The name most often refers to Khedive Tewfik of Egypt, who ruled from 1879 until his death in 1892 and governed under strong British influence after the 1882 occupation. The record notes that the Bain News Service caption is unverified, and the negative is undated. Since the service worked in the early twentieth century, long after the Khedive's death, the sitter may be a different Pasha who held the same title, so the identification should be read with caution.
