The name on this glass negative points to Nellie Melba, the Australian soprano who took her stage name from her hometown of Melbourne and became one of the best-known opera singers of the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, but the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made many portraits of visiting performers and public figures, and Melba's American concert tours drew wide press attention. Bain's glass negatives now serve as a record of how newspapers and magazines supplied images of celebrities to the public. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the identification is worth checking against the original cards.
