The Plaza de Armas is the central square of old Guatemala, a traditional Spanish colonial layout built around a grid of streets and government and religious buildings. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early 20th century. The record gives no exact date, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives, so the view is best read as a general record of the square at that time. Such images are useful for seeing how plazas like this one looked before later rebuilding.
