The flowing cursive signature set beside the dark profile sets this piece apart from the plainer portrait images on the Lincoln board. Silhouettes like this were cut from black paper or painted in solid tone, and they were popular in the nineteenth century, when a quick, inexpensive likeness was prized before photography became common. Lincoln was among the public figures shown this way, and the handwriting adds a personal touch, since people of that period often read a signature as a sign of character. No maker is identified here, so the exact artist and date remain uncertain.
