Shown in strict profile with a full beard framing the jaw, the sitter is captured in a pose less common than the frontal view in studio portraits of the period. The sepia tones and small card mount mark it as a carte de visite, a format photographers sold in large numbers from the early 1860s, when Americans collected and exchanged likenesses of public figures and family. The gallery files it under Abraham Lincoln, whose beard and profile were widely reproduced during his presidency, but the record does not name the sitter, so that attribution is worth checking against other sources.
