This chromolithograph, titled *Lee and His Generals*, puts Robert E. Lee together with the Confederate officers who served under him, a grouping that sets it apart from portraits of Lee alone. It was published by W. B. Matthews of Washington, D.C., with a copyright date of April 11, around 1907, more than four decades after Lee's surrender at Appomattox in 1865. By then, Lee had become a central figure in Southern commemoration, and colored prints like this one were a popular way to honor such leaders. Chromolithography, which used multiple inked stone or metal plates to reproduce color artwork, made these images affordable to many buyers.
