The Going" takes its title from the moment of parting, and the print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office under the name of Anna Louise Shafer of Chicago. It dates to about 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, when many young men left home for training camps and overseas service. Sentimental images of farewells like this one were widely reproduced and sold as tokens of sweethearts and families separated by the war. The Library of Congress keeps it in its World War, 1914-1918 subject file, which is why it appears here among the Valentine's Day pictures.
