Rather than a camera original, this is a halftone reproduction of a portrait of Jonathan Scott Hartley (1845-1912), printed as an illustration on page 212 of the 1953 *National Cyclopedia of American Biography*. That multivolume reference series, issued by James T. White & Company, paired short biographical sketches with portraits to put a face to each name. The halftone process, which breaks a photograph into a pattern of tiny dots so it can be printed in ink, was the standard way to reproduce photographs in books and periodicals from the 1880s onward, so the image shows as much about printing practice as about its subject. The record flags its data as unverified, so the sitter's identity and the original photograph's date are worth checking against the cyclopedia itself.
