The title names a firm, the Standard Engineering Company, and describes a "big camera," though the record notes that the title is unverified. Its 8 by 6 inch glass plate is one of many from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that worked from the early 1900s into the 1930s and recorded the city's businesses, government, and people. The negative dates to about 1920 to 1921, a period when large-format view cameras were still common for commercial and technical work. Because the glass was made by hand-coated processes, it has developed streaks and other blemishes, which are visible as the original coatings have deteriorated.
