A man with a hand-pushed cart of nuts stands ready to sell to passersby, a figure of the informal street trade that once animated American towns and city sidewalks. Peddlers like him worked on foot, often with a small stove or open tray, and roasted or salted nuts were a cheap, portable treat that sold well to workers and shoppers. Pushcart vendors moved goods straight to customers without a shop, which made them a common sight on busy streets and at market edges. Look at how the cart, the goods and the surrounding street are arranged to get a sense of how commerce worked outside the storefront.
