Mountain Valley Apples, grown by Kress & Carey of Hamilton, Montana, is a crate-label design that names both the fruit and the Montana orchard that packed it. Labels like this one were printed in large runs and pasted onto wooden shipping boxes, so they advertised a product to buyers far from the orchard. Western apple growers in the early 1900s used bright chromolithographed scenes and brand names to set their fruit apart on crowded city produce counters. The Bitterroot Valley around Hamilton became known for its orchards, and a label like this one shows how growers marketed a regional crop as a quality product.
