A glass negative of Fifth Avenue above 42nd Street, dated to a Sunday in March 1913, records a stretch of midtown where the grand residences of the Gilded Age were giving way to shops and office buildings. George Grantham Bain's news agency produced pictures like this for newspapers that wanted images of the city on a given day, and working on glass plates gave the prints fine detail. The street name and date come from notes on the negatives and caption cards, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, so the exact spot on the avenue is worth checking against the image itself.
