A motorcycle postman, photographed in 1912, puts a mail carrier on two wheels at a time when the Post Office was still testing how far powered vehicles could extend rural and city delivery. Mail routes of that era depended on horses and wagons, so a motorcycle on the route signaled a shift toward faster, cheaper service. The Library of Congress holds the print in its Prints and Photographs Division, and it is worth looking closely at the rider's uniform, the machine's bulky frame and the rough road beneath it to see how early motor transport differed from what followed.
