Despatch riders and their British motorcycle set this glass negative apart from the other automobile views in the Bain collection. These riders carried written orders and messages between units, and motorcycles were well suited to the work because they could cover rough roads faster than many alternatives, a role that became common in Britain during the First World War. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold pictures like this to newspapers, so the negative reflects the wire-service interest in machines and military news of its era. The date is not recorded, and the title comes from unverified caption data.
