Here the bass Adamo Didur appears in costume as Boris Godunov, the title role of Modest Mussorgsky's opera about the Russian tsar. Didur, a Polish-born singer, spent many seasons with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the brooding, guilt-ridden tsar suited his deep voice and commanding stage presence. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose glass negatives documented theater and opera performers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the identification rests on caption information from the agency, so the exact production remains uncertain.
