Jim Thorpe, on the left, stands with Thomas McLaughlin on a track in this view, and Thorpe is widely remembered for winning the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record describes McLaughlin as being from Boston, but it gives no date or event, so the occasion can only be placed loosely within Thorpe's athletic years.
