Few balloon illustrations of this period show the inside of the envelope, which makes this plate unusual. It comes from Jean-Baptiste Meusnier's *Détails d'un projet de machine aérostatique*, the engineer's plan for a steerable airship. Printed after the Montgolfier brothers' first hot-air and hydrogen flights in 1783, Meusnier's design proposed an elongated envelope with an internal air chamber to help it hold its shape and control its movement. The plate is worth studying for its attention to structure, since it shows how Meusnier was thinking about the balloon as a machine rather than only a bag of gas.
