A portrait of a man listed as Fernando I. Calderon survives on this glass negative, though the library notes that the name comes from Bain News Service caption cards and has not been verified. George Grantham Bain founded his New York agency in 1899 to supply newspapers with photographs, and its files grew into one of the largest picture collections of the early twentieth century. Because the Bain pictures were made for quick reproduction in print, many carry only a rough date and a name taken from the caption, so the sitter's identity and the exact date often have to be inferred from the studio's period and related files.
