Hand culture refers to tending cotton plants by hand, through chopping out weeds, thinning seedlings, and picking bolls, work that stayed central to American cotton fields well into the twentieth century even as machines spread. The title pairs that tending with "treatment," a term that in farm writing of the period could mean seed preparation or protecting the crop from pests. Images like this were often made for agricultural bulletins and farm publications, so they record methods as well as landscape. Their value to a viewer lies largely in showing how much of the crop depended on people working close to the ground.
