Armour's thyroid advertisement is a reminder of how openly patent medicine and early pharmaceutical makers sold their products to the public. Armour & Company, the Chicago meatpacking firm, turned its slaughterhouse byproducts into glandular preparations, and by the early twentieth century its desiccated thyroid tablets were widely prescribed for conditions we now understand as thyroid deficiency. The ad reflects a period when medical treatments were marketed directly through magazines and posters, often with confident claims that few patients could check for themselves.
