Leach Cross was a prizefighter who competed in the boxing rings of New York in the early 1900s, and this glass negative likely records him in that world. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain, sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines, and its boxing pictures were prized for capturing fighters in training, at weigh-ins, and in the ring. The record gives the title from the agency's own caption cards without independent confirmation, so the exact occasion and date remain uncertain. Glass negatives like this one were the standard medium of press photography in those years, and their sharp detail helps show how sports coverage was documented before widespread use of film.
