Adolphe Menjou, who later became one of Hollywood's best-known polished leading men, appears here alongside Kathryn Carver in a card that was colored by hand, a finish that was common on early picture postcards. Cards like this were often made of stage and screen performers and sold or mailed as keepsakes, and a romantic pairing made them suitable for holiday sending, including Valentine's Day. The card sits on a board of Victorian couples, but its clothing, printing, and color treatment point to the postcard fashions of the early twentieth century, when many fans collected images of performers.
