Denver in 1859 depicts a settlement only a year or two removed from its founding, set along Cherry Creek and the South Platte River in the foothills where gold seekers had gathered during the Pike's Peak rush. The town took the name of James W. Denver, governor of the Kansas Territory. Because the record dates the print to about 1891, it was most likely drawn from memory or earlier sketches rather than made on the spot, so it is best read as a later view of the frontier town and how its boomers wished to recall it.
