This wood engraving shows a train winding along a ledge cut into the side of a mountain in the Canon of Las Animas, a gorge in Colorado served by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. The engraver worked from a photograph by W.H. Jackson, the Denver-based photographer known for documenting the state's railroad scenery. It ran in *Harper's Weekly* in September 1886, when magazines still relied on hand-cut wood blocks to reproduce photographs. The image shows how the railroad's engineers hugged steep canyon walls to reach the mining and resort towns beyond.
