The silver candle and the moths, drawn by Hamilton for the July 25, 1896 issue of *Judge*, uses a simple image to comment on the free silver debate. A candle burns at the center while moths cluster around its flame, and the cartoon's color and single central figure make the point quickly. In 1896 the silver question dominated American politics, as Democrats and Populists pressed for unlimited silver coinage and opponents warned it would weaken the currency. Weekly humor magazines such as *Judge* used cartoons like this one to reach readers who followed the campaign closely.
