Five separate photographs are gathered onto one page here, all showing young women at summer pastimes, with tennis and bicycling the two activities named on the caption card. The page ran in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in August 1896, a popular weekly that used halftone reproduction to print photographs alongside drawings. The "summer girl" was a stock figure of the period, a fashionable, outdoorsy woman whose leisure stood for modern independence. At the height of the 1890s bicycle craze, images like this helped make cycling look respectable for women.
