Labeled "Guard" at its lower right, this color lithograph shows a Princeton football player in the position that blocks for the ball carrier and holds the line. Chas. W. Beck copyrighted the sheet in 1907, and it belongs to a wave of sporting posters from the early 1900s, when college football was drawing large crowds and the Thanksgiving Day clash between Princeton and Yale was among the season's most anticipated games. The artist signed the work with a pictograph, a symbol rather than a written name, which makes the sheet worth studying for who made it and how it was marketed.
