Yellowstone Falls, where the Yellowstone River plunges about 308 feet over a basalt lip in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, is one of the park's most photographed sights. Its setting in the northeastern corner of Wyoming's Yellowstone country made it a favorite subject for nineteenth-century survey photographers and painters who helped convince Congress to set the area aside as the nation's first national park in 1872. The "Wonderland" series in this collection belongs to that tradition of pictures meant to show a landscape few Americans had seen firsthand.
