The Metropolitan club shown here was one of New York's most prominent teams in 1882, when it competed at the professional level of the American Association. Studio portraits of nine-man lineups like this one were a common way for clubs of the period to promote themselves, and they usually show players in matching uniforms with bats and balls posed for the camera. In 1882 most fielders still played bare-handed or with very thin gloves, so a photograph like this captures baseball before the padded mitts that later became standard.
