A December 1909 scene on 14th Street in New York shows firemen and their equipment working against a burning building. The picture is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with images of city news in the early 1900s. Fire companies of that period still relied heavily on horse-drawn steamers and hose wagons, and motorized apparatus was only beginning to replace them, so the equipment reflects a city fire service in transition. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact building and event are worth confirming.
