Albert Herter's color lithograph "In the name of mercy give!" was made in 1917, when the American Red Cross was campaigning for donations to support its work in the First World War. The poster ties the Red Cross's nursing and medical relief to an appeal for money, a link the organization leaned on heavily as the United States entered the war that year. Herter was a painter better known for murals and decorative commissions than for posters, which gives the piece a more classical, painterly quality than many wartime appeals. It belongs to the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection at the Library of Congress.
