Few summit views are as wide as this one, a strip of gelatin silver print about 48 inches long that spreads the mountaintop across the frame. The photograph dates to about 1919 and was registered for copyright that September by Stewart Brothers, a studio in Colorado Springs, the city at the peak's foot. By then visitors could reach the summit by the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, a cog line that opened in 1891, and by the auto road completed in 1915. The gallery's train category reflects that railway, which carried tourists up the mountain for decades.
