Houndsditch, the London street the caption names, is an old thoroughfare in the City, and the title pairs it with the word "outrage" and a scene of firemen at work. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote and that have not been checked against other sources, so the exact incident is uncertain. Bain's agency sent glass negatives like this one to newspapers across the United States in the early twentieth century, when horse-drawn and newly motorized fire apparatus was a frequent subject of news pictures. The image is worth studying for its equipment and street setting, which show how urban firefighting looked at that time.
