Marie Curie, the Polish-born physicist and chemist who shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband Pierre and Henri Becquerel, is the subject of this glass negative, though the record gives no date and its title is only an unverified label supplied by the Bain News Service. The Bain company was a Manhattan press agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, so the image was likely made for quick publication rather than as a studied portrait. Curie's 1921 visit to the United States, when American women raised funds to buy her a gram of radium, drew wide press coverage, and images like this one document how the public came to know her.
